Carl Justus Harmen Fedeler, artist. Oil on canvas. 1839. Topsail schooner MARY LOWELL. in heavy seas. Schooner sailing to the right of the painting. Headland to port astern, small boat off the starboard bow in the foreground. Built by J.A. Lovell in 1852. Image: 19.75 x 26.75 Frame: 24.5 x 31.25". This vessel was built at Machias in 1852 and registered as a brig or half-brig, although this 1853 painting shows what many people would call a square-topsail schooner rig. The vessel did some coastal cargo carrying but was often registered for foreign voyages, and is typical of the smaller vessels sometimes used in trade to Europe.
