As often as not, important archaeological finds are discovered purely by chance. When a geologist was conducting mapping work in the Duvensee Moor in 1923, he stumbled upon a Mesolithic campsite which was then repeatedly investigated by archaeologists over the next few decades. The most important find at these excavations is a paddle of pinewood which, at more than 8 000 years old, is among the oldest in the world.
