20th Century

Lima, Peru

This cotton skirt was painted with kené designs, geometric patterns traditionally made by Shipibo-Konibo women on their bodies, clothing, ceramics and other objects.
The kené is linked to the skin of the primordial anaconda that gave rise to rivers and constellations, as well as the paths used by humans to communicate.
