This handscroll depicts the whole process of the Shogun’s deer-hunt in Koganei-hara field with illustrations and captions. It was held by the 11th Shogun Tokugawa Ienari (1773-1841) in 1795. The scroll is gorgeously bound, which is a suitable piece for recording the Shogun’s event.
Ienari’s deer-hunting was of the largest scale in the Edo period. Therefore, it is thought to have been one of the popular themes for paintings among the feudal lord families.
