The Shonai coast is blessed by the warm Tsushima current (Kuroshio current) from the Sea of Japan, making the coast a high productivity ecosystem. Over 200 different species of seasonal fishes are caught from the coast. Seasonal ingredients such as Winter Cod and Cherry Salmon are enjoyed and integrated into the food culture of the people in Tsuruoka.
