The Royal Mint1216 to 1248

The Royal Mint Museum

The Royal Mint Museum
Llantrisant, South Wales

There were two issues of silver pennies. The first (1216-1248) was similar in type to the last issue of Henry II. In 1248 the reverse design was altered to a cross with limbs extending to the edge of the coin, and having three pellets in each angle. In this image the inscription LONDON CIVITAS, which indicates that the coin was struck at the Royal Mint in London, has been highlighted.
Accession number RMM 7271
