This is a tool designed for catching an octopus or scooping mud from a tidal flat. An octopus shovel resembles a spade used for irrigation work, but it is smaller and has a narrower blade than that of an irrigation spade so as to catch octopuses with ease from a tidal flat, and there is a handle at one end for convenient use. A mud shovel is used to scoop mud from a tidal flat and its relatively narrow blade allows it to be easily used in viscous mud.
