If we consider the small size of the image space available, we’ll appreciate the goldsmith’s mastery in terms of his skilful elaboration of only some few, expressive details.
Seals have been known since classical antiquity. The motif is engraved as an intaglio (negative relief) into metal or carved into stone. Often worn in the form of a signet ring, a seal is not only an eye-catching adornment on the wearer’s hand, but can also be applied easily and comfortably at any time. Even in later epochs, signet rings continued to form part of the jewellery spectrum.
