Silk Embroidery Fan Appliqued with Ivory Flake

China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

This octagonal fan is framed by black lacquered wood frame, bordered in gold. The middle of the handle is shaped as a begonia, and the outside is painted in flowers, plants and people. Stories are painted on both sides of the fan, and the faces of the people are all appliqued with ivory flakes, giving rise to a vivid and lifelike presentation of the facial features. The clothes and shoes are appliqued with fabrics and paper, and the rocks, flowers, plants and trees are color embroidered. This fan rolls the techniques of lacquer, embroidery, drawing and appliqueing into one, creating a piece of art that is delicate, gorgeous and vividly layered.
