Silk with Small-Scale jardinières-Type Design

China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum

Small-scale jardinières-type designs gradually emerged in Spain during the 15thcentury and were commonly used in textiles comprising half-silk or wool fabrics. In this example, the design composition features vases with flowers arranged in a row, filled in between with symmetrical bird heads and diamond patterns. The fabric is made using two colored sets of overlapping warps (with a 1:2 ratio of yellow to blue). The blue warp and weft are interwoven to create the plain weave ground while the thick yellow warp forms a hovering floral pattern, resulting in orderly and symmetrical patterns.
