Everything here tells us this piece of furniture is a real showpiece. Made from expensive materials, the design has a historicizing style which is utmost modern for its time. In the 19th century, these so called ‘neo-styles’ were popular throughout the whole of Europe. This was accompanied by a nostalgic longing for the past. To evoke the sense of times gone by, different styles would be combined at random. In this cabinet design, the young Hillebrand uses both gothic and renaissance ornaments.
