Silver Teapot

18th century

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

This fruit-shaped silver teapot has a handle in a twisted rope design. A string connects the handle and a finial on the lid to prevent loss of the lid. This relic is one of the burial items recovered from the grave where Princess Hwayu (10th daughter of King Yeongjo, 1740-1777) and her husband Hwang In-jeom (Unknown-1802) were interred together. More than 30 relics that the Royal pair would have used in their lifetime, including stationery, accessories, and pottery, were discovered from their grave. Some are considered to be items that Hwang had brought back from China of Qing Dynasty where he visited a number of times.
