The beneficial properties of the bell sound have been celebrated since antiquity. Ovid (1st century BC and AD) and Pliny (1st century) spoke about the prophylactic properties of the sound of bronze, used in the Anthesteria (Ionic festivity in honour of Bacchus) and the Roman Lemuria (festival dedicated to the dead).
