Prince Franz met the Englishman Sir William Douglas Hamilton (1730-1803) on his second Grand Tour in Italy. He was an art collector, volcanologist and diplomat and as such was at the court of the Kingdom of Naples. The encounter between the two was a very fruitful one: through Sir William Prince Franz not only reached Vesuvius, but also became better acquainted with the area of the Gulf of Naples. He had a smaller version of his summer house built on the island of Stein in Wörlitz Park and named it “Villa Hamilton” in memory of the Englishman.
