McCarthy grew up in the Philadelphia area and attended the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now known as Moore School of Art). She became one of the founding members of the Philadelphia Ten with her oeuvre including still lifes, landscapes and portraits. Her early death was the first death of the original members of the Philadelphia Ten and it affected the remaining members deeply. They included her work in two exhibitions and despite her death, the remaining members were determined that Helen McCarthy's work should live on.
