Knaus made this drawing in preparation for his painting "Mud Pies" (1873) (Walters 37.21). A graduate of the Düsseldorf Academy, Knaus turned to naturalism and studied in Paris for eight years, where he achieved considerable success. He later served as an instructor at the Berlin Academy.
