National Museums of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya

This is a leather skirt made of goatskins. The wet skins are pegged out in the sun to dry hair downwards and with pegs piercing the edge of the skin at about 6 intervals. The hair is scraped off the dried skin with metal scraper and the skin is rubbed with cow fat and covered with red ochre. Green, yellow, orange, red, dark blue, black and white beads are used to decorate the skirt. It is made and used by married women.
