El Rastro was painted in 1915, when Diego Rivera was fully engaged in the exploration and experimentation of cubist techniques. The name of this small painting refers to the famous flea market in Madrid, frequented not only by the general public but also by many writers and painters. These included Rivera and the writer Ramón Gómez de la Serna, a regular visitor, who wrote a book with the same title as that of the painting, where he described in detail everything that went on at the Rastro, as well as the variety of produce to be found there. The painting refers to, and incorporates iconographically, certain passages from the book by Gómez de la Serna, whom Rivera had met during his residence in Madrid.
