Small milk container

National Museums of Kenya

National Museums of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya

This is a stone for smoothing the outside of a wooden container, made by an elderly Dorobo woman. The woman cut the required wood from the Lkorbobit tree with a knife. The knife is used to cut out most of the shape of the container and its lid, but the finer finishing is done by a lighter knife. The middle of the container is then dug out and the cut side of the container is rubbed with a stone to smoothen it. It is then rubbed with a mixture of milk and black soot made by burning donkey dung.
