This ship sailed around the Mediterranean during the 12th and 13th centuries, and then became one of the main protagonists of the geographical discoveries of the 16th century. Magellan and Elcano took five ships on their voyage. The Santiago, captained by Juan Rodríguez Serrano, was the smallest of these ships, with a crew of 32 men. It was the first to be lost; shipwrecked on May 3, 1520 in the Santa Cruz River estuary in Patagonia (Argentina).
