Small silver-gilt dish from Kermira in Caesarea, with a finely worked ornamental inscription on the rim; dated 1719. The Karamanli scrip -i.e., the Turkish language transliterated using the Greek alphabet-is the earliest example to survive on a liturgical vessel. The Museum’s collection of refugee treasures contains a large number of codices in the Karamanli script, which was used by Turkish-speaking Greeks of Cappadocia and of Asia Minor in general.
