Snakebranch spruce has a very distinctive architecture: while the branchlets weep gracefully, the trunk continues to grow upwards and the main branches grow horizontally. If the whole tree remained thin and flexible like those little branches, it could never become a full-grown tree. Instead, it would just creep along the ground like a vine. This remarkable combination of different growth forms within the same tree makes a mature snakebranch spruce unlike any other tree.
