1762-1763

The Walters Art Museum

The Walters Art Museum
Baltimore, United States

In "en plein" enameling, the enamel is applied directly to areas that have been carved out of a surface. This oval box displays Rococo gold work in scrolls and floral motifs. On the cover is a scene of Venus receiving a breastplate from Jupiter painted by François Joseph Bourgoin, a noted enamelist who worked for King Louis XV during the 1760s.
