Salar Jung Museum
Hyderabad, India

This large bronze statue made in the Vijayanagara kingdom in the 16th century illustrates the Somaskanda theme -charming image of Shiva, Parvati his wife, and their young child Kartikeya, also known as Skanda. Skanda is described in many verses as a youthful handsome boy, as radiant as the sun and leader of Shiva’s army. Siva and Parvati sit on a broad pedestal in lalitasana and child Skanda stands in between them. Siva is four-handed, the back right and left hands holding the parasu and the mriga respectively, and the front right hand in the abhaya mudra. The front-left hand of Siva and Parvati's right hand are in the kataka hasta posture. The figures are tall and slender and the ornamentation is sparse and tasteful. Siva's tall headgear is ornamented with a snake and a crescent moon.
