  • Title: Sports Programme from MV Manunda
  • Date Created: 1934-01-01/1934-12-31
  • Provenance: In 1927 the Adelaide Steamship Company in Australia ordered a new liner to provide full-time Australian coastal passenger services, which had previously only been offered by the company on a limited scale. The Twin Screw Motor Vessel Manunda was built by William Beardmore and Company at Dalmuir in Scotland. The vessel was 136 metres long with a beam of 18 metres. Diesel motors provided power to the two propeller shafts, with a top speed of 15 knots Passenger capacity was 176 first class and 136 second class. The ship was launched on 27 November 1928, and completed on 16 April 1929. It was the largest ship operated by the Adelaide Steamship Company at the time and as a result of its success, the company commissioned a larger, faster sister ship, Manoora, Manunda arrived in Australia in June 1929 to begin duties on the Australian coastal trade, running passengers and cargo between Sydney, Fremantle, Melbourne and Cairns. The Manunda, like many of the ASC liners, offered a variety of shipboard entertainments including deck tennis, shuffleboard, and dances. It is unclear whether the Social and Sports Club was instigated by the crew for the crew or was one of the ship's passenger entertainments.
