An example of Shimabori or hikibori (“stripe” cutting, or “pull” cutting). As the name implies, this is a method of cutting stripes. The craftsperson cuts stripes by pulling a stenciling knife toward themselves against a ruler. In the most detailed work, about 10 even stripes are cut per centimeter. This is known as gokumijin (“extreme fragmentation”) and requires consummate skill.
