In 1994, the K.S. Lo Foundation donated over 600 pieces of Chinese seals by noted artists to the Urban Council of Hong Kong. In order to house and display this valuable collection, the K.S. Lo Gallery was constructed as an extension adjacent to the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware. This seal is one of the most precious pieces of the donation. It is carved with four incised characters "endorsed by Jiaolin". The character "Jiaolin" is the alias of a noted connoisseur and collector of painting and calligraphy, Liang Qingbiao of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. This seal is carved on tianhuang stone. Tianhuang stone belongs to the family of Shoushan stone which can be found in the Shoushan village of Fuzhou, Fujian province. The beautiful colour and extremely fine texture of Shoushan stones are dearly cherished and are valued much higher than gold by weight. The seal is a masterpiece carved by Cheng Sui (1607 - 1692). Cheng Sui, also known as Muqian, hao Gouqu, Gou daoren, Jiangdong buyi, was a native of Shexian, Anhuai province of the late Ming and Qing dynasties. Cheng excelled in landscape painting, poetry and calligraphy. He was a prolific seal carver famous for the decisive and dashing rendering by knife which resulted in a vigorous and elegant style. Cheng was an influential artist of the famous Wan (Anhui) School.
