The cult of St. Anthony of Padua was very present during Spanish vice-regal period in America and believers sought for his help and protection. This Doctor of the Church was usually represented carrying Baby Jesus in his arms, as in this case, or supported also on a book. The carved wood of this Quito-sculpture exhibits the folds of the saint’s robes. St. Anthony and the Child look straight at the eyes of the viewer.
