Pieter Saenredam was one of the most remarkable painters of the 17th century. From his home town, Haarlem, he travelled to various towns in the Dutch Republic to draw the exteriors and interiors of buildings, mainly churches. The first painter to actually measure these buildings, he made detailed construction drawings which he further developed into paintings, sometimes many years later. St Antoniuskapel in the St Janskerk was created from a drawing he made in 1636, now housed at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
