St Catherine of Siena

Franceschini, Baldassare17th Century

Dulwich Picture Gallery

Dulwich Picture Gallery
London, United Kingdom

Saint Catherine is shown here in the habit of a Dominican Tertiary with a crown of thorns – the same iconography chosen by Carlo Dolci for his smaller painting of the same subject, also hanging in this room (DPG242).

Both refer to a vision in which Christ offered the Saint the choice between a crown of gold and a crown of thorns. She chose the latter.
