The depiction of St Lawrence, distinguished by his attributes
of the vestment and the gridiron of his martyrdom, is a lofty
example of the mature work of the Spanish painter Jusepe de
Ribera (Xátiva, 1591 – Naples, 1652), who played a leading part
on the Neapolitan art scene in the first half of the 17th century.
The expressive characteristics of his art are all evident here,
from the virtuoso handling of paint to the accentuated realism
and the depth of psychological penetration shown in the figure’s
expressions and gestures
