This painting of St. Stephen was originally created as one of the outer doors of a small traveling altarpiece; its pair is also in the Cincinnati Art Museum collection, St. Christopher (accession number 1956.793).

As shown here, Saint Stephen – the first Christian martyr – delicately holds the stones used for his execution by the Jews for blasphemy. In the far background he is depicted in miniature, disputing with Jewish elders, while his martyrdom is displayed in the near background.
