Born and raised in Kingfield, Maine, the Stanley twins, Freelan Oscar and Francis Edgar, were partners in a photographic dry plate business in Newton, Massachusetts.
In 1897 they began producing automobiles there, selling over 200 by the fall of 1897. In 1906 Fred Marriot drove the highly modified “Wogglebug” to a land speed record of 127.66 mph. Marriot tried to break this record in 1907 but crashed at about 150 mph.
