Statue of a woman

Unknown-2800

Rijksmuseum van Oudheden

Rijksmuseum van Oudheden
Leiden, Netherlands

Looking at this limestone head, our attention is drawn to the large, pointed nose, which blends seamlessly into the low forehead. The effect is rather caricatural. The huge eyes and joined eyebrows originally had inlays. The short hair is cut high above the ears and tied in a knot. A headband keeps the knot in place. Hairstyles of this kind were first seen around 2400 BC and remained fashionable until the end of the Akkadian Period, around 2180 BC.
