Under Hammurabi of Babylon (1793–1750 BC), the early Babylonian Empire reached its zenith. Its borders were extended far to the north, and it maintained trading relations with Syria, Anatolia and the Mediterranean region. At the same time, it is clear from the frequent appearance of the motif of a god dispensing water that irrigated agriculture continued to dominate daily life.
