These two statuettes, 1983.98 (Statuette of a Man) and 1985.136 (Statuette of a Man), come from very different periods in Egyptian art and reflect the times in which they were made. The limestone example comes from the late Middle Kingdom. Its compact, self-enclosed form, tightly wrapped in a long kilt, and-above all-the serious and withdrawn expression of the face reflect the sobriety of that age. The ebony statuette comes from the luxurious and cosmopolitan age of Amenhotep III. Made of wood, the effect is overall more spontaneous and lifelike. With its suave modeling and inlaid eyes, this expertly crafted work of art still makes a vivid impression.
