The Milanese call these small steam locomotives "Gamba de Legn" (wooden leg, lame), probably due to its characteristic swaying motion. At the end of the 19th century, horse traction was replaced by the first tram locomotives, which were more powerful and economical to operate. Carriages were closed along the sides to protect pedestrians and horses from accidental bursts of steam and rocks thrown up from beneath the wheels of other carriages. This locomotive initially ran on the Milan-Gallarate line for commuter service, before being reassigned to the Monza-Trezzo d'Adda. The Gamba de Legn made its last run in the summer of 1957.
