Founded in 1894 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the Hubley Manufacturing Company specialized in cast-iron toys. The company's earliest products included trains and trolleys powered with steam, electricity, or spring mechanisms. In the early 20th century, Hubley expanded its range of products to include miniature stoves, still banks, cap pistols, and dollhouse kitchen appliances, but the company continued to focus on transportation toys-from horse-drawn circus wagons to trucks and motorcycles. By 1940 Hubley reigned as the largest manufacturer of cast-iron toys in the world. Though rising freight costs and increasing foreign competition eventually led Hubley to cease cast-iron production, the company remained in operation until 1990.
