A special stenciling knife with a tip in the shape of a cherry blossom or diamond pattern, for example, is used for dougubori. The knife is applied vertically and the pattern is cut out in one go. The quality of the cutting tool will determine how the stencil comes out, and so making the tools also requires a high level of skill.
