Samuel Fastlicht was a dentist of European origin, who arrived to Mexico in 1921. He made great contributions to Pre-Columbian history, particularly in reference to dental mutilation and herbal medicine used by ancestral Mexican cultures. He befriended Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, and was also their dentist. For Dr. Fastlicht, Frida painted two works: Self-Portrait with Medallion (1948) and this still life.
