Sofia, Bulgaria

There is no information about the education Ivan Abrashev received. Most probably, he left Bulgaria in 1921 together with his older brother Nikolay Abrashev. In 1924, he and Nikolaj Abrashev had an exhibition in the Brazilian cities of Belem and Recife, and his work was labeled by Brazilian critics as Futurist.
In 1927, the two brothers settled in New York. Ivan Abrashev taught at the Abrasheff School of Fine Art in New York and managed the school’s annex in Boston. He participated in exhibitions of the Boston Grace Horn Gallery and had a solo exhibition at the Van Diemen Lilienfeld Gallery in New York. His paintings reveal the features of post – war Abstract Expressionism.
