In Still Life with Utensils, as in many of Rivera’s works from 1916 and 1917, there is a great interest in reducing objects and figures to geometrical shapes, colors, and basic spatial locations. It was through reflections, shadows and refractions that the artist expected to define the fourth dimension. Claiming to have discovered the secret of this fourth dimension, in 1917 Rivera built an artifact he called La chose (the thing), similar to a kaleidoscope he used to demonstrate his achievement. During this period he also studied metaphysics and science.
