Stone relief of Priapus

Koper Regional Museum

Koper Regional Museum
Koper, Slovenia

The relief consists of a frontal view of a standing naked male figure, a cloak hanging over his shoulder, cut into a solid block of stone. The disproportionately large bearded head has a grotesque appearance. The figure holds a knife with a curved blade in his right hand, while his left arm supports a platter of fruit against his hip. His oversized erection hangs slightly downwards and to the right. All the depicted attributes symbolise fertility and undoubtedly indicate that this is an image of the god Priapus.
