The project to repair the East Rill in the early 1990s unfolded as part of a landmark project to repair deteriorating stonework throughout the Formal Garden by Somerset County Council who owned/leased the gardens at the time. The significance and architectural features of the Lutyens and Jekyll garden were such that funding was made available from English Heritage towards the overall cost of a 6-year project. The list of works included the iconic Lutyens rills which were to be reset and waterproofed.
