The Temple family bought Stowe in the late 16th century. Sir Richard Temple built a new house on the estate between 1677 and the early 1680s. This was rebuilt and extended by Lord Cobham in the early 18th century who employed employed William Kent and James Gibbs to enhance the surroundings. From 1741 Cobham engaged Lancelot 'Capability' Brown as head gardener and clerk of works. Brown would go on to set up his own landscape practice in 1750.

After the estate was sold in 1921 it became a public school and in 1989 much of the park was acquired by the National Trust.
