Belts were worn over a shirt and tunic. At one end of the leather belt, a metal fitting called a strap end was added. The strap end was pulled through a ring at the other end of the belt and tightened. It often hung down to the thigh, as the position of many finds in graves revealed. The strap end weighted the belt and prevented the leather from curling up.
