Strictly Ballroom (1992) directed by Baz Luhrmann
Film posters are powerful visual tools for promoting a film, building a star's persona and creating buzz. The Strictly Ballroom poster, with its parted red curtains, whirlwind of spangled gowns, and hints of the romatic sub-plot between the characters of Scott and Fran, enticed audiences to 'a simple story, fabulously, imaginatively and seductively directed' noted a reviewer at the time. First-time actor and trained ballet dancer Paul Mercurio was heavily used in the build-up for the film. 'People went along and saw a star' said film critic Margaret Pomeranz.
