Many members of the press came to Homestead from across the country to cover the Homestead Strike. All outsiders were only able to enter and stay in town by the grace of the strikers, including press. While early reports were quite sympathetic to the strikers and their cause, the treatment of the Pinkertons after their surrender and the attempted assassination of Frick by anarachists began to change the tone of coverage and, in time, affected public opinion.
