In the small German-French border town of St. Germanshof (near the German town of Bobenthal and the French town of Weissenburg) 300 young people and students from various European nations met on August 6, 1950. They sawed up the border trees and posts and occupied the area. With posters stating "You are coming from Europe. You are staying in Europe," they called for the opening of borders and a united Europe. The German barrier was erected by demonstrators by force. The customs officials' wives look out of the windows with interest.
