The adventures of Uncle Wiggily, as written by Howard R. Garis, first appeared in "The Newark Evening News" in 1910. Uncle Wiggily was a gentleman rabbit with a hat and a rheumatism crutch. He appeared in more than 200 newspapers between 1910 and 1962, in books, and in a Milton Bradley Company 1919 board game. In the 1964, Reuben R. Kaufman, president of Jayark Films, acquired the rights from Howard's son, Roger Garis, to put Uncle Wiggily on television. Kaufman stated that "this is the right time for Uncle Wiggily to go on TV. The most popular children's programs have resorted to violence, extreme actions, sex and a whole variety of devices not in the best interest of children."
